Money plants can be propagated easily by taking cuttings from their mother plant and planting them directly in water for rooting. Money plants are one of the easiest plants to propagate!
Subtly switch out the water of your money plant regularly but sensibly. Money plants produce and coat their water with hormones which aid in building stronger roots.
Preparation
Money plant, commonly referred to as pothos or Devil’s Ivy, is an easy houseplant to care for in water environments. Propagated from its own roots or seeds, money plants make an excellent option for beginners looking for something vibrant to brighten their interior spaces.
To grow a money plant in water, begin by cutting a 4-6 inch section from an established money plant with nodes that can produce roots and placing it into a clear glass jar with clean, filtered water. Doing this allows you to monitor the roots’ development while decreasing chances of algae formation.
Once the roots have taken hold, transfer your money plant to a suitable soil mix such as Plantic Premium Potting Mix or Pinegro 30L Coco Peat Ready To Use recommended by Bunnings Workshop. Care must be taken when transporting any plant so as to not damage its roots, so make sure any plastic wrap and moss from around them is carefully removed prior to planting it in its new home. Once planted, water it regularly according to temperature and humidity of its environment.
Watering
Money plants need plenty of moisture, but their roots mustn’t remain submerged for too long or they risk root rot. Their water needs depend on temperature and humidity conditions in your home; to give your money plant the best chance at receiving its daily quota of nourishment it is best watered first thing in the morning before sun exposure causes rapid evaporation of its precious liquid nutrients. A well-draining peat-based potting mix will ensure they receive their necessary daily amount. You may wish to add dilute liquid fertiliser when watering; use products designed specifically designed for indoor plants following instructions on label instructions as to the amount required dilution instructions when watering your money plant! However fertising will not be required during winter months!
Locate your money plant in a bright location, but avoid placing it directly in sunlight, as direct light can quickly scorch its leaves. Rotating your money plant periodically so both sides receive equal light may help, though too frequent rotation could result in stress and stunted growth.
Light
Lighting plays an integral part in the growth of money plants, as money plants prefer bright indirect light with minimal direct sunlight that could scorch its leaves. Furthermore, changing water often to replenish lost nutrient content and ensure optimal root development is occurring – using replacement water that has been chemical-free and sanitized will ensure you receive optimal nutrient delivery to ensure maximum success for your money plant.
Add some liquid fertilizer to the replaced water to promote root development; any general-purpose plant fertilizer would do well here.
Once your roots of your money plant have taken hold, you can move it into a regular pot containing nutrient-rich potting mix and regularly prune your money plant to promote bushy growth. Pruning should take place at any time of year by cutting just above leaf nodes to stimulate new growth from that area of the plant. In order to keep growing new roots quickly and effortlessly, consider providing it with support such as trellises or moss sticks so it can attach itself when growing outward.
Temperature
Money plants are delicate creatures and thrive best in warm temperatures with high humidity. In an environment with lower humidity, their leaves may start turning yellow and developing spots; sudden relocation may even stop their growth completely.
When propagating Money Plants in water, select a clear glass container with proper ventilation for adequate aeration. Fill the container with clean distilled water that is free of chlorine, and leave to sit for at least 12 hours to evaporate before changing out the water every week to prevent bacteria or algae growth that might impede root formation.
Once the Money Plant is ready to be repotted, water it with a well-draining mix of soil that includes perlite for added drainage to help avoid waterlogging. Finally, when planting stem cuttings into their new homes use gentle handling as you do so.
Fertilizer
Money plant (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the few houseplants that can thrive without fertilizers, making it an excellent choice for beginners looking for minimal hassle indoor decorating solutions. But please keep in mind that money plants require an established environment – being moved too frequently could result in all their leaves dropping in protest!
To propagate a money plant, take a healthy stem cutting and cut just above a node. Place this cutting in a glass jar filled with water in direct indirect sunlight for 3 to 4 days; change out its water regularly as its drainage holes may provide drainage; you should find roots starting to emerge within days!
Once the roots have reached about one third of their length, transfer it to a pot with pre-moistened Rosy money tree soil and make sure it doesn’t dry out too much during its growing season. Apply a liquid fertiliser once every month during its growing cycle for best results.
